The MAMM is pleased to present an exhibit of the legendary Tasma Photo Group from Kazan. The exhibit is part of the project History as Seen by the Camera Lens: The Lens is Looking at Us that was conceived by the State Fine Art Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan and implemented with the support of the President of the Russian Federation

In the 1950s, houses of culture all over the USSR began to offer interest groups and clubs in different areas, including photography, in keeping with the imperative «Art to the Masses.» The best known photo club in Kazan was the club at the State Museum of the TASSR, which closed fairly soon following charges of free thinking. In the mid-1960s, photo adepts migrated to the Volga Photo Club at the Lenin House of Culture at the local aircraft factory; the club was headed by factory engineer Sergei Stepanov. The Volga-67 All-Soviet Photo Exhibit, organized by the Volga Photo Club and attended by well-known Moscow photographers, evoked the profound interest of Kazan inhabitants and lively debate among club members. The mass interest in photography led to the emergence of the genre of «salon photography.»
Tasma appeared in opposition to the trends of the time. It was organized by the outstanding photo journalist Vladimir Bogdanov in the mid-1970s. According to group members, the main merit of photography was its unique language and its immediate relation to life and to the viewer. Photo journalism was the basis of the Kazan Photo School from the 1970s to the 1990s. The work of the Tasma Group was not limited to social journalism, however. The deeply personal relation of Tasma photographers to the world around them helped them to bring across the sensation and atmosphere of the 1970s and 1980s and make a portrait of their time, which became their own self-portrait. These qualities allowed Tasma to become a full-fledged group and enter the history of contemporary photography.
The exhibit presents over 100 photos that recount the development of Tasma from its foundation to the present day. The exhibit includes works by all 22 group members: Vladimir Bogdanov, Boris Davydov, Vladimir Zotov, Lyalya Kuznetsova, Rif Yakupov, Zufar Bashirov, Valery Mikhailov, Rustam Mukhametzyanov, Yuri Filimonov, Albert Bagautdinov, Farit Gubayev, Alexander Tambulidis (Grek), Edvard Khakimov, Vladimir Razumeychenko, Vadim Nikiforov, and others.
