This project is presented by the Museum “Moscow House of Photography” with the support of the Fleming Family & Partners Company

This is a commercial project, conceived and created for the Cheliabinsk Tube Works, for the annual celebration honoring business leaders. Like fanfares that praise the winners who managed to sail successfully through the stormy waters of everyday business. The team of managers is a harmonious wind Big-Band, where each performer is an accomplished creator. The jazz-industrial setting of the whole series clearly indicates that business willingly turns to improvisation.

Even though this project was commissioned by a company, it outgrew the narrow commercial limitations and the initial name «The Symphony of Success» was changed, for this show, into a dry nostalgic cliche «Board of Honor». This ironic dryness instantly helps one to find the correct focus and stress even more the honorable overtones and the syncope of sentiments caught by the camera.

May be it is the music that gives birth to harmony or vice versa, but when a person touches an unknown instrument some magic happens, so you no longer know whether you see a successful businessman or a lazily rehearsing musician. The process of mutual enriching of the instrument and of the personage adds more meaning both to the eyes of the latter and to the worn bronze of the trumpet. Looking at these works, we recall the style of jazz portraits of the mid-20th century and the vinyl record covers of the fifties. It is not that important whether the authors have managed to trick the viewer, but one can definitely hear some kind of music, be it Stan Gets, Chat Baker, or may be the offscreen voice of the fanatical conductor in Fellini’s «Orchestra Rehearsal».

During their work the authors got so carried away by the industrial aura of the half-century-old factory walls, by the charisma and the charm of these men, that it could not but bring about a result which pleased all the participants of the project. We want to thank specifically the representatives of the Tube Works Group in Cheliabinsk.

Vlad Igonin (Duck Design), art-director of the project
