«More Than Fashion» considers developments within fashion photography itself. The first photographs in this exhibition have been taken in the early 1920s; the last photograph dates from 2011, spanning nine decades and the oeuvres of 36 photographers. The show features classic examples of fashion photography starting with Cecil Beaton and Georges Hoyningen-Huene, including Irving Penn and Richard Avedon and reaching as far as David LaChapelle, Kristian Schuller and Armin Morbach.
But the catwalks of this world are no longer found only within the grand fashion shows in Paris, Milan, Berlin or New York; today fashion is created on the dancefloors and on the streets all over the world. Within this exhibition, the photographs of Leon Levinstein, Wolfgang Tillmans and Heinrich Riebesehl represent this aspect of fashion in photography.
Artists such as Cindy Sherman, Fergus Greer, Jürgen Klauke or Zoe Leonard offer a third approach. Their contributions to this exhibition - some of them radical, some of them amusing - open the eyes of the observer to the way, we change fashion and fashion changes us.
