Marshall McLuhan, renowned philosopher and researcher into the effects of mass media on humanity, argued that any new media, whether this is a newspaper, television or telephone, becomes an extension of our senses. The art group Electroboutique (Aristarkh Chernyshev, Alexei Shulgin) clearly illustrates this idea in the ‘Invisible Message’ project. We can only see the message using digital technology, since the work simultaneously exists in different light spectra – visible and invisible (infrared). The work should be perceived both directly with the eyes, and through the lens of a digital photo/video camera or mobile phone that is sensitive to infrared light.
