The England that I knew and loved in my childhood and adolescence lies halfway between the England of Benjamin Britten and the England of today. No return there was necessary for these photographs: a search through my collection of images, books, musical scores, films and memories was enough. Britten’s Songs combine voice, piano and the music of the English language, with authentic sounds that let us forget universal world English. I want these photographs to be perceived as a kind of musical composition, as images that vocalise what England has been telling me all these years.
