VLADIMIR MISHUKOV
If I Was…
The Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow presents Vladimir Mishukov’s exhibition ‘If I Was…’
“Photographing a child from the position of an adult, looking down at them, is the wrong approach, in all respects. Because you deprive them of the opportunity to be on an equal footing, and therefore open with you, and deprive yourself of the chance to see the natural manifestation of a little person.
When you shoot at their height level – squatting or kneeling – there’s a certain shift in your usual coordinates. They are aligned according to the level of perception of the person at whom the lens is directed. Then there is a feeling that the children in the photographs are more grown up. And their age is approximately the same. The age of quite independent people, confidently navigating in their own space.
Trying on not only your parent’s clothes, but also their roles, should be considered as the first experience of self-identification, expressed by identifying yourself with the adults living nearby. Even if only in the imagination, and for a short time.
You could say that this series of photographs is an attempt to capture the new generation that will one day take our place and dress in our ‘skins’. Of course it’s not yet fully formed, not sufficiently developed. But it already exists.
What will we pass on to them, what canl we leave behind for them? These non-childish questions with all their anthropological background seem to me the most significant when I look into the faces of these people.
They rely on us. Just as we rely on them. And in that sense the series is about the hope we all feel.”
