The 21st century, like the 20th, has begun with crisis. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, two of the most important ideologies of the 20th century, determinants of man’s social identity, are being eroded — communism and capitalism. In their place an ideological vacuum is forming, which today, at this crisis-stricken, complex moment in time, is being filled by diametrically opposed concepts of national and social identity, referring back, among other things, to antiquity and to ideologies already proven to be untenable, or so it seemed. In the age of globalisation Russia, too, has been caught up in these processes. Andrey Ivanov’s camera records signs of these spontaneous searches in the urban space.
